  1. Long-running trumpeter, born in Sophiatown, Johannesburg, South Africa. A founding member of the African Jazz Pioneers, Stompie was also a regular guest for Pacific Express and numerous other jazz ensembles. It was he who taught Hugh Masekela to play the trumpet, with his son Gershon Manana having followed in his footsteps.

Sadly the version on this album featuring Patti Labelle was a disappointment. That said I enjoyed the album as a whole. Highlight for me being Sam Moore & Conway Twitty doing "Rainy Night in Georgia". Recommended/5().
  9. Stompie Manana has spent more than 50 years playing the trumpet, and was a founder member of the famous African Jazz Pioneers. He is by far "one of the most underrated and unheralded" trumpeters in the country (quoting Sipho Hotstix Mabuse). At 79 he still plays the trumpet and the Flugel Horn.
